PlumbingModern Spanish plumbing is quite good these days but there are just a few wrinkles you might like to know about.WATERA lot of people on the Costa de la Luz have their own water from a well. This is not the type of well that Grandma had but a much more efficient device. It consists of a bore hole about 6" diameter going down 20 - 50 metres where the natural water table is. Usually the winter rain is sufficient in most areas to supply the water needs all Summer including pools. Into this hole is lowered a stainless steel electric pump (an Archimedes Screw for the technically minded) which supplies water on demand to the house, pool and outside taps. These are very powerful and can fill a pool in two days. A new one will set you back €300 - 600 and they have been known to go missing during the night so most people have a lock on the well box.The water that comes up is usually very hard and good for bathing, watering and making tea. Most don't drink it unless boiled. Bottled water for drinking is very cheap. This hardness causes a few problems.
If your area is Urbanised you may have proper mains water when most of these problems are less pronounced if present at all.BEWAREThe plastic pipe from the well to the house may only be inches under the soil! It is very easy to put a garden fork through it. The author and several friends have done this. A quick fix is to turn off the breaker in the fuse box (it's an electric pump) and seal the hole with a rubber washer and a hose clip.TIP - You may find a plumber on this site! PLUMBERSWater pipes in the house may also be plastic in the walls and can be drilled through just as easily.
