Television
On regular Spanish TV, there are no English speaking programs. Everything
is dubbed. SKY is readily available on the Costa de la Luz and several installers advertise on this site. You will need a 1.8 metre dish and a decoder. If you are bringing your own, the Grundig box isn’t very powerful and may not get weaker channels like Channel 4 or 5, best to buy one from your installer. It will cost around €350 to install a dish and from €500 for a system. You can buy the usual packages or just go “free to air” which will give you ITV, BBC 1, 2, Channel 4 and 5 and some dozen or so others plus BBC radio ( you can listen to Wogan & Wrighty!! ) World Service and so on totally free!! You may need a UK address if you opt for a contract package giving you Movies etc. See our Classifieds - TV & Video Section English: Via Digital, formerly called
CanalPlus, is a service where you pay for a small satellite dish and decoder
(like USA's HBO). Unfortunately, as of 9/2002 they decided not to renew their
contract with BBC Prime due to lack of sufficient viewership. That leaves cable
companies (if any are available in your neighborhood) or buying your own
satellite dish. BBC Prime is in negotiations with one cable company, ONO. As
for satellite options, here's what Mario Giannini from BBC Prime says: ...in the absence of BBC Prime being
available on either cable or satellite platforms, the only means of accessing
BBC Prime is with a DTH subscription. This would entail buying your own
satellite dish and a Viaccess-compatible digital satellite receiver, and using
our signal on Eutelsat Hotbird 5 at 13 degrees east. You can then subscribe
directly to BBC Prime, as a stand-alone channel, at a cost of GBP75 +VAT per
year (plus a GBP12 +VAT charge in the first year only for the smartcard). BBC
World would be available free-to-air on that satellite.
