Solar energy is the cleanest and
most inexhaustible of all known energy sources and is the heat, light
and other radiation that is emitted from the sun. It contains huge
amounts of energy and is responsible for almost all the natural
processes on the Earth, including our weather system (rain and wind).
The growing
interest in Solar has been prompted, in part, by increasing concerns
over pollution, resource depletion and possible climate change
implications due to our continued use of conventional fossil and nuclear
fuels. This, combined with recent technological developments has
increased the cost-effectiveness of Solar, particularly for domestic
applications. This reduced pay-back time now makes solar very
attractive.
So how does it
work? Put simply, the Sun’s energy
can be ‘captured’ in one of two ways. The first way is to use a solar
photovoltaic panel that directly converts the energy from the Sun into
electricity. This electricity
can then be used to power your home or, if you have a mains connection,
the electricity can be sold back to the Grid
(here in Spain, the
electricity supply company is obliged, by law, to buy ´your´ power off
´you´ at four times the cost of their selling price!!!!).
The second
method is to use a solar collector panel that absorbs and transfers the
Sun's heat energy directly into water. This can then be used for domestic
hot water, heating your swimming pool or to provide central heating for
your home. Some applications combine all of these features, for example,
providing all year round domestic hot water while heating the pool in
the summer months and then switching over to the central
heating system
to heat your home during the winter months. |
