CARS To own a car in Spain you need an NIE number. You should apply for this no. at the local police station and it will take a few days or a few weeks to get depending on the area. You do not need to be resident for this but you will need the number for all kinds of things so it's worth doing. (See Residence Card) Road tax is payable at the Town Hall but there is no windscreen sticker. Instead you get a stamped certificate which must be carried in your car along with the car documents. Only originals or certified copies (at the Notary) are allowed. You must also carry your Driving License with you and your passport. Although you technically no longer need to get a Spanish driving license you should register your British one with the police. The Spanish do a lot of spot checks and as well as on the spot fines there are now penalty points for any of the above lapses!! The Spanish MOT is called the ITV and is due every 2 years after new. You get a windscreen sticker to display. This is not a rigorous test but it's worthwhile getting a British mechanic to do it for you. There are several who advertise on this web site. As well as paying tax on buying a car you will also have to pay tax on selling one! If you are importing a UK car it will have to be Matriculated (re-registered) and have a Spanish plate if you intend to use it here permanently and it is compulsory if you become an official resident. We recommend you use a Gestor to do this for you. © myCADIZ.biz 2004
