IMPORTING A CAR

BREAKDOWN OF APPROXIMATE COSTS INVOLVED :-

1. Ficha technical drawing 100 Euros

2. ITV station (mot) 60-100 Euros

3. Hacienda to pay impuestos 7% or 12% of value of car or Baja € € €

4. Road tax 100 Euros

5. Traffic office solicitud 68 Euros

6. Go to opposite office with paperwork NA

7. 2 days later go back for number NA

8. Get number plates made up 25 Euros

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW TO GO ABOUT IT :-

1) Get ficha technical drawing done, usually takes approx 2-4 days to get.

2) ITV station in San Fernando, Be prepared to que.

Go in the office facing you as you drive in with all the paperwork including ID. Hand it in at the desk and they will give you a ticket / que number to get into with the car.

Just sit and wait in the car until you get to the front of the queue then the man will instruct you what to do with the car. They may say you will need to return in a couple of days or so for the paperwork to be processed.

Remember if it is a RHD English car the headlights will face the wrong way and you may be better to put the car into a garage for a pre-itv first as they will need to get lhd headlights fitted.

3) Tax only due if the client hasn’t been to get a Baja from the consulate in Malaga the 7% or 12% is due depending on the size of engine and fuel type.

From the town hall they will give you a paper to start the registration process.

This used to be a 565 but changed. Go to the town hall office next to the private medical centre next to the market ask at reception they will forward you to a the correct person.

Take along with you all the paperwork/ NIE copy empadron copy and eticetas if needed you can obtain from the same office, the ficha drawing and the log book. Have copies of NIE empadrons at all times…. For all offices if they ask for them…..

4) You will need to go and pay the road tax ( this is in the main town hall office as you enter the doors its to your left down a couple of stairs and pay the lady behind the window)

(the car will have to go in the same name that appears on the log book)

Next is the traffic office…. Cadiz 5) 6) 7)

Take along all paperwork. First thing to do is go to the left office and take a ticket as there will usually be at least an hours wait !! Then…

Ask at reception for a solicitud de primera matriculation, fill in the form and sign. Take it to the office on the right and pay approx 68 Euros.

Then check your ticket number and wait your turn to go to the window to hand in your paperwork …

At the window present all paperwork and pray they don’t want anything more !! They will then give you a slip of paper and tell you to return usually the next day or so to collect the paperwork.

8) When you get the paperwork take it to recambios in chiclana near the roundabout at the end of Alameda del Rio ( old Bridge next to the tyre place). Hand it in there and get the plates made up and fit them to your car !

Make sure the car has adequate insurance on the new number plates before fitting them….

Alternatively you can get a company to handle this for you at a fee of usually around €100 - €150 depending on how much work is involved ie headlights etc and pre-itv / extra trips due to fail usually not needed so would charge extra for this.
